Signs You May Need a Tooth Removed
If you’re experiencing discomfort or noticing changes in your teeth or gums, it may be an indication that tooth removal is necessary. Common symptoms of a tooth in decline include:
- Persistent pain in or around the tooth
- Swelling, redness, or inflammation of the gums
- Bleeding from the affected area
- Pus discharge around the tooth or gum line
- Looseness in the tooth that wasn’t present before
These symptoms often point to an infection or severe decay that may require removal. Our dentists will thoroughly examine your mouth to determine if extraction is the right course of action, or if a restorative procedure like root canal therapy or a dental crown can save the tooth.
Tooth Extraction Timeline
When it’s determined that a tooth extraction is necessary, the process begins with a consultation. During this visit, our dentists will evaluate the source of your discomfort and assess the overall health of the tooth. X-rays may be needed to examine the tooth’s roots, check for impaction, or get a clearer view of its position below the gumline.
As mentioned above, if an alternative treatment is viable, our dentists will recommend a less invasive option first. However, if extraction is the best course of action, we will proceed with the removal. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia will be used to ensure your comfort, and we also offer dental sedation options such as laughing gas, oral conscious sedation (pill form), and IV sedation for those with dental anxiety.
Once the tooth and surrounding area are fully numb, the extraction will take place. For wisdom teeth or other impacted teeth, an incision may be made in the gumline to access the tooth properly. Not all extractions require stitches, but we can place them as needed to control bleeding and promote healing. After the tooth is removed, the site will be cleaned, and gauze will be applied to control bleeding.
The recovery process typically takes about 3-4 weeks, but healing time and aftercare instructions vary from patient to patient. Be sure to contact our Portage dental office if you experience excessive swelling or bleeding post-extraction.
